Spiritual Nomadic Caravan 精神游牧大篷车 at the factory
Encampment, hospitality, DJ set
Beijing

The Spiritual Nomadic Caravan is an open collective project initiated by Tang Guanghua 唐冠华 with other researchers, academics, artists, travellers and adventurers. Aiming to found an anarchic commune on land they had been granted in Fujian, the group imagined a symbolic journey from Shandong to Fujian, pitching tents in different cities for one or more nights to offer hospitality and discussion to local people. It had developed and published a whole alternative philosophy of life: learning self-sufficiency, building one’s house from natural, sustainable materials, growing and cooking local food.
The caravan spent a day and a night at the Bernard Controls factory in Beijing, sharing time, food and entertainment with workers, managers and employees. The sound artist, performer and composer Fenni joined them and DJed in the factory all day, during working hours, to great appreciation.
Tang Guanghua, born in Qingdao in 1989, initiated the art project Invisible Revolution and co-founded AnotherLand; he directs the Zhengrong Public Welfare Foundation and the China Self-Sufficiency Laboratory and co-founded Xi Public Welfare. Among other recognitions, he was nominated for the UNDP Equator Prize in 2017 and 2019 and was a finalist for the UN Young Champions of the Earth in 2018. For ten years he has explored a self-sufficient, sustainable way of life in the mountains and forests of northern and southern China, practising the idea of a “consensus community”. He is the author of The Way of Independence.
