Beijing Project n.39 Liu Chengrui (Guazi) 刘成瑞（刮子）

Liu Chengrui (Guazi) 刘成瑞（刮子） had a suit made in the colours of Bernard Controls and performed silent, purposeless gestures in different areas of the workshop. Looking as if he were carrying out some unknown production task, he created a different space of interaction, based on the strangeness of his ambiguous presence and actions.

Before this intervention he visited the plant several times and shared images of his earlier works with workers and employees in informal conversations. Concerned about how to interact in an interesting way without disturbing or being too direct, he arrived at the idea of a “second space” of interaction, lying beyond the verbal and formal levels of the daily working routine.

He returned to the factory on many occasions and held a series of interviews with workers and managers. He developed a lasting relationship with Wei Chengcheng, and together they created a two-person performance in the factory, again blended into the daily routine.
