Research on the practice of “la perruque”, photo documentation
Beijing

Michael Eddy is an artist, researcher and writer from Halifax, Canada. For many years his practice has dealt with social issues. He studied in Canada, the United States and Germany and took part in artist residencies across Europe; his work combines collective and individual actions that question the economic and socio-political status quo. He explores alternative ways of organising public space and social gatherings to activate the social fabric, and has long studied the nature, process and workings of debate and group discussion. He worked for the gallery space Vitamin in Guangzhou and Beijing and, since 2008, has co-directed the independent artist-run space HomeShop in Beijing.
At Bernard Controls he chose to explore “homers” – in French, la perruque: objects made on company time with company materials. He had already been researching this and related topics with his collaborators in Knowles Eddy Knowles. As he wrote when asking to continue the research within the Social Sensibility programme: “Did you know that my collaborators Knowles Eddy Knowles and I have been working on the topic of cigarettes since 2006, and for several years as well on these objects made on company time with company materials, called ‘homers’, as described by Michel Anteby?”
