A factory might seem an unlikely site for art creation, but that’s where nine students found themselves earlier this month, leading a printmaking activity as part of a trip exploring collaborative art practices designed and led by Associate Arts Professor of Visual Arts Monika Lin in collaboration with Susan Dai from the Community-Engaged Learning Office.  The printmaking activity, "Community Narratives,” focused on everyday objects as symbols of memories, place, and identity, and encouraged the students to connect and create with factory workers at Bernard Controls, a French valve manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Beijing. They spent a full day at the factory, interacting with the workers and assisting them in their art creation while experimenting with their own works.  The students, who hail from China, the US, and Guatemala, learned about the factory workers’ lives through the objects they had brought, then led them through the steps of printmaking. The activity required the students, with varying degrees of fluency in Mandarin, to make a connection with the workers as they led them throughout the activity.  For some of the international students, the experience was as much about art creation as about Chinese language immersion. “I’m used to being around Chinese [language] and not understanding, but now I’m actively trying to speak and understand instead of just sitting there and doing nothing,” said Amelie Woc ’28. “It inspired me to learn more.”  The activity was in partnership with Social Sensibility, a collaborative art project that brings artists into the factory to create art together with workers. Founded by Italian artist Alessandro Rolandi and coordinated by Chinese artist Zhao Tianji, the project has brought more than 40 artists into the factory over the past 15 years. Several of the factory workers have had their art works displayed in exhibitions in Beijing and abroad.

Une usine peut sembler un lieu improbable pour la création artistique, mais c'est pourtant là que neuf étudiants se sont retrouvés plus tôt ce mois-ci. Ils ont animé une activité de gravure dans le cadre d'un voyage explorant les pratiques artistiques collaboratives, conçu et dirigé par Monika Lin, professeure agrégée d'arts visuels, en collaboration avec Susan Dai du Bureau de l'apprentissage communautaire. L'activité de gravure, intitulée « Récits communautaires », s'est concentrée sur les objets du quotidien comme symboles de souvenirs, de lieux et d'identité, et a encouragé les étudiants à créer avec les ouvriers de l'usine Bernard Controls, une usine française de fabrication de valves située en périphérie de Pékin. Ils ont passé une journée entière à l'usine, à interagir avec les ouvriers et à les accompagner dans leur création artistique tout en expérimentant leurs propres œuvres. Originaires de Chine, des États-Unis et du Guatemala, les étudiants ont découvert la vie des ouvriers à travers les objets qu'ils avaient apportés, puis les ont guidés à travers les étapes de la gravure. Français L'activité a demandé aux étudiants, avec différents degrés de maîtrise du mandarin, d'établir un lien avec les travailleurs pendant qu'ils les guidaient tout au long de l'activité. Pour certains des étudiants internationaux, l'expérience était autant une question de création artistique que d'immersion en langue chinoise. « J'ai l'habitude d'être entourée de chinois [langue] et de ne pas comprendre, mais maintenant j'essaie activement de parler et de comprendre au lieu de rester assise là sans rien faire », a déclaré Amelie Woc '28. « Cela m'a inspirée à en apprendre davantage. » L'activité était en partenariat avec Social Sensibility, un projet artistique collaboratif qui fait venir des artistes dans l'usine pour créer des œuvres d'art avec les travailleurs. Fondé par l'artiste italien Alessandro Rolandi et coordonné par l'artiste chinois Zhao Tianji, le projet a fait venir plus de 40 artistes dans l'usine au cours des 15 dernières années. Plusieurs des ouvriers de l'usine ont vu leurs œuvres d'art exposées dans des expositions à Pékin et à l'étranger.

La professeure Monika Lin avait déjà organisé en 2024 le premier atelier collaboratif à la Bernard Factory de Pékin, permettant aux étudiants de l'université de New York à Shanghai de collaborer avec le département de recherche et développement en sensibilité sociale.
